Do I need an app to sell B2B on Shopify?

What already ships with the platform

For years, selling wholesale on Shopify meant installing a wholesale app or building a workaround with customer tags and automatic discounts. That changed: Shopify’s documentation now lists B2B on Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus, and excludes it only from Starter and Retail.

Native means the wholesale price arrives at the theme already resolved: the front-end asks for the variant price and gets the one that belongs to the buyer’s company. No app calculating anything in the cart, no discount applied at the end that the buyer does not understand.

What people mistake for “I need an app”

Almost everything people ask a wholesale app for is not pricing: it is order flow. A size table with stock and quantity per row, SKU search, quick order, reordering last month’s order, hiding prices on screen. None of that is solved by a pricing app: it is front-end work on the theme, and it works on any plan with B2B.

This is where most budget gets wasted: a monthly app that solves 20% of the problem gets paid for, and the other 80% is still missing.

When you do need something more

Three specific cases:

1. Per-account discounts without Shopify Plus. Catalogs are assigned per market, so a per-account list needs Plus or a public app.
2. Cart rules that look at the whole order. A minimum order value, not mixing price tiers. That is a Function, and a custom Function needs Plus.
3. Data that lives in your ERP. A credit limit, a discount negotiated outside Shopify. That is an integration, not a catalog app.

If you are in none of those three, the honest answer is that you do not need an app: you need somebody to build the order flow properly.
