Do I need a new theme to sell B2B on Shopify?

Short answer: No. A wholesale portal can be built on the theme you already have, a paid one included: the catalog price arrives at the theme already resolved, and access is decided with a Liquid condition on customer.b2b?. What is usually needed is front-end work on that theme, not starting over.

Why you do not need to start over

The part of B2B that looks hardest — every company seeing its own price — is not done by the theme. It is done by the platform: the catalog assigned to the company resolves the price before the theme asks for it. That leaves the theme with one decision, which is who sees prices and who does not.

That means a well-built paid theme already works as a base. The wholesale portal for Émolo, a jewelry brand from Murcia, is built on top of the Prestige theme the store was already using.

What does have to be added

This is where the real budget of a B2B portal goes, and it has nothing to do with design:

  • Deciding access with a Liquid condition, in every place a price appears and not only on the product page.
  • A per-variant order table, with stock and quantity per row, which is how a wholesale buyer orders.
  • SKU search, because a professional searches by reference rather than by product name.
  • The catalog’s quantity rules applied to the field itself, with min and step, so the buyer is warned before typing rather than at payment.
  • Reordering the last order, the most used feature of any portal.

When a new theme is the answer

For the same reasons as in B2C, not because of B2B: when the paid theme has been modified so much that updating it is impossible, or when the brand needs something no theme in the store does. If neither applies, the budget goes much further spent on order flow than on rebuilding the whole front-end.
