Shopify Plus

Shopify Plus is Shopify’s top plan. What it unlocks that genuinely changes a project is four things: unlimited B2B catalogs assignable to a specific company or location, the ability to install custom apps containing your own Shopify Functions, checkout customisation beyond what a public app allows, and development stores.

Also called: Plus, Plus plan, Shopify enterprise

Plus is sold as “for large brands”, which does not help anyone decide. The useful question is not the size of the brand, it is whether the project hits one specific wall in the plans below.

The five real reasons

In order of how often they come up in the projects I get:

  1. More than three price lists actually in use. The active catalog limit without Plus is three across the whole store.
  2. A negotiated price per account instead of per tier. Without Plus, catalogs are assigned per market.
  3. Different catalogs per branch of the same company. Without Plus a catalog cannot be assigned to a location.
  4. Custom Functions. Only stores on Plus can install custom apps that contain Shopify Functions. Without Plus you can use functions that ship inside a public app, but not one written for your store.
  5. Checkout beyond what a public app allows.

If you tick one, the conversation stops being technical and becomes arithmetic. If you tick none, the budget for the plan upgrade goes further spent on order flow.

What is not a reason

“We want to customise the checkout” is not enough on its own if what you want is colours, a logo or an extra field: that is done with extensions and public apps on plans without Plus. And “we are going to grow a lot” is not one either: Plus can be bought the day it is needed, and the wall shows up in the number of price lists long before the number of orders.
